Isle of Palms is thought to be at least 25,000 years old!  It’s originally was named Hunting Island and then later became Long Island.  The area was first discovered the Seewee Indians.  They were to have greeted the English settlers to the area by carrying the travelers to shore.  According to the legend the only life on the island that been there were pirates who buried treasures for safekeeping.  The island played a large role in the Revolutionary War.  There was an attack on Sullivan’s Island which is adjacent from Isle of Palms where nearly 2,500 men began a raid.

Years later in the 19th century the island became more recognized by locals as the place to go to beat the summer heat.  The first hotel was built on Isle of Palms in 1906 that had 50 rooms and other amenities.  In 1912 there was a beach pavilion put together along with an amusement park.  By 1929 a ferry would go across the Charleston Harbor making it easier to travel, and in 1945 is when a bridge would link the two islands, being Sullivan Island and Isle of Palms.   When the 1970′s came around more real estate began to blossom from houses to resorts.

Today you will find many locals and visitors on the Isle of Palms.  It is a gorgeous place to visit no matter what time of the year you decide to come.  The Isle of Palms History is a great learning experience and a way for us to uncover the past.
